I made a Minnie Mouse Pinata few days back for a Minnie Mouse themed Birthday party. It came out great and I wanted to share how I made it.
I didn't use the traditional method of making the pinata by gluing pieces of paper, but used a not so thick cardboard and cut into a shape to make it. I didn't use a very thick cardboard, like the carton box kind, since I wanted the pinata to break after a few hits. And I read in few sites that the pinata made out of a carton box was almost impossible for the kids to break. I also didn't make it very thin as I wanted to be sure that all the kids get at least one chance to hit the pinata.
So here we go!
You'll need:
-------------
- A piece of cardboard or two sheets of calendar paper (that's what I used atleast on one side of the pinata. For the other side, I found a perfect thickness of a cardboard sheet, but it wasn't enough to use for both sides.) The size of the sheet or the cardboard depends on how big you want your pinata to be.
- Strips of thick cardboard strips. I cut mine from a carton box. This will be used for the width of the pinata. I wanted this to be thick, since this will hold the weight of the candies or other goodies.
- Crepe papers to decorate.
- Duct tape.
- Glue & scissors.
Steps:
----------
1. In the cardboard sheet which will be used to make the front and back of the pinata, draw an outline of the design of the character you want to make. In my case I cut out the front and back of the pinata in the shape of the Minnie mouse. Make sure the shape for the front and back piece are exactly the same.
2. Cut the strips of thick cardboard approx 5 to 6 inches wide or whatever width you want for your pinata and roll these strips, like you would roll a ribbon. Rolling these strips makes it easier to give any shape and when you go around your shape .
3. Use the strips you cut in step 2 to go around the edges of the shape which you cut in step1 and use duct tape to keep the strip in place, just like the picture below. Make sure to leave a gap on top of the pinata and not to stick the strip all the way around. this gap will be used to fill up the pinata with the goodies.
4. After you stick the strip around the edges of one side of the pinata, now place the other side of the pinata to the edge and duct tape the sides. Just like the picture below.
5. If you notice in the picture in step3 you will notice that I had an extra flap on top of the minnie head which I used to close the top of the pinata and to attach the string too.
6. Now its time to decorate!! I used black and pink crepe papers to decorate my pinata.
